She spent the early part of her career working with children and families organizing safe play, interactive learning, and treatment-based activities within the juvenile justice system, Detroit Public Schools Community District, and her church as a volunteer.
Krystal entered into the public eye in 2021 as a political newcomer competing for a Detroit city Council seat. She inspired thousands of Detroit families with a message of hope, equity, and generational opportunities through workforce inclusion and economic justice before accepting a political appointment as Director of Community Outreach for the Wayne County Clerk's Office.
Krystal is married to her lifelong love who is a successful entrepreneur, philanthropist, and nonprofit leader who is also formally incarcerated through the War on Drugs. The couple grew up together experiencing poverty right down the street from one another. Krystal's professional and lived experiences inform her understanding of the positive impacts of mentorship, family values, and economic opportunity on communities that have been marginalized.
In her spare time, Krystal leads organizing efforts in her neighborhood, welcoming every new neighbor with gifts and by connecting them to other neighbors. She enjoys working out, dancing, and reading. She also loves camping and traveling the country with her husband, three daughters, and their three dogs in their RV. Her daughters—known as the HersheKissis—are straight-A students and cultural influencers, followed by almost 300k Instagram users as they lift up the brilliance and beauty of Black people and the power of marraige in the Black community.
