Black Marriage Movement partners with universities to mesh community wisdom with academic rigor to introduce learning that solves community problems through speakers, workshops, and technical assistance.
Fatherhood Facts
Black dads are more involved with their children than any other group of men in the country. This is a stat that flies in the face of the incorrect and disparaging narratives that shroud Black fatherhood. But we didn't make it up. The truth was uncovered over a decade ago by the United States CDC. And data tells us that fatherhood involvement is one of the strongest indicators of how well children and their birthing parents fare. Recently, Black Marriage Movement joined forces with Southeast Michigan Perinatal Quality Improvement Collective (SEMPQIC) to improve systems and address racial disparities in health, education, and economics on behalf of children by centering Black fathers. We authored SEMPQIC's 2024 evidence-based fatherhood resource, The Color of Fatherhood: A Facilitator's Guide for Supporting Dads on the Perinatal Journey. We also created CARE for Fathers, a provider workshop helping birthing hospitals develop strategies for supporting fatherhood involvement.
Then we partnered with MI AIM to host health provider workshops from Detroit to Hancock, Michigan. Stay tuned for the report of our findings while on the road.
